Help Us Spread Our Message

Submitted by Adam Koch on March 30, 2006 - 10:24am.

Our campaign continues to roll on, calling for a end to this disastrous war, promoting equal rights for all Americans and advocating positions that are consistent with the values of most New Yorkers.

Now as the March 31 filing deadline approaches, we need your help in making one final push to meet our first quarter fundraising goals. Our campaign continues to be fueled by individuals not corporate donations, and we need to rely on your continued support to get our message out across the state. So please, make a generous contribution today, and help us show Senator Clinton and others who continue to support the Iraq war, that they will be held accountable for their actions.

Close Indian Point

Submitted by Jonathan Tasini on March 29, 2006 - 10:05am.

Yesterday, I attended a four-hour hearing in Peekskill about the new leaks from the Indian Point nuclear power plant. It was a great display of citizen involvement: the room overflowed with hundreds of local residents who came to express their concern about the plant.

To be clear, I believe the plant should be shut down--permanently. It has one of the worst, if not THE worst, records of any nuclear power plant in the country (and that's saying a lot). Certainly, the plant should be shut down immediately until the company can find the source of the leaks and fix the problems, at least on a temporary basis--because there is no permanent safe solution to a plant and a technology that is inherently dangerous.

What struck me is how much the community distrusts the company, Entergy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). And both have earned that mistrust. The company cannot tell the community what the source of the leaks is--but, then, reassures the community that there is no health or safety risk. The NRC is hopelessly compromised because, for decades, it has not been a serious watchdog of the industry--in fact, it has acted far more as a cheerleader and apologist for the nuclear industry.

There is an opportunity here. Shutting down this unsafe plant AND, at the same time, campaigning for safe, energy alternatives in the state would send a powerful message throughout the nation that the end of nuclear power has arrived and our state wants to lead the way to a new way of thinking how to keep our lights on and businesses running.

The Patriot Act- Even Worse Than It Seems

Submitted by Adam Koch on March 27, 2006 - 10:26am.

Our campaign has harshly criticized Senator Clinton for voting to reauthorize the Patriot Act. In light of new revelations regarding President Bush’s actions when signing the reauthorization, just how big a mistake Senator Clinton’s vote was becomes even clearer.

As the Boston Globe reported on Friday, when Bush signed the bill into law on March 9th, he added a signing statement, after reporters had left, which said he was not obligated to inform Congress about how the FBI used expanded police powers.

Immigration: Again Clinton is Seeing Red

Submitted by Anonymous on March 26, 2006 - 10:49am.

One day after over 500,000 demonstrators gathered in Los Angeles to protest the Administration’s immigration policy, it is important to again revisit the policy of our own Senator Clinton.

According to Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colorado, Mrs. Clinton, realizing there is "no better way to draw in more conservative voters", has come out "against illegal immigrants", as she told WABC Radio's John Gambling--not against illegal immigration, not for a mature dialog on how to improve the lives of all residents of the U.S., but against immigrants themselves. This position is tough to swallow considering that, "on average, immigrants pay more in taxes each year than they use in government services" and under current laws employers too often play citizen and immigrant workers off each other "to the detriment of both groups"(Drum Major Institute).

Clinton- Still Silent on Censure

Submitted by Adam Koch on March 24, 2006 - 9:39am.

Senator Feingold continues to make his case for the censure of President Bush. Wednesday night, as a guest on the Daily Show, Feingold noted:

"I was taught that the congress makes the laws and the president is supposed to sign them and enforce them. He's not supposed to make them up. ---How many times are we going to let George Bush and Dick Cheney say you guys don't support the troops, you're not patriotic and let them push us around?"

Judging by the lack of support from his fellow Democrats in the Senate, including Senator Clinton, the answer to his question would appear to be: At least once more.
